A reading list on ABCD (over 150 resources)

Asset-based community development

[Updated 9 November 2019 to add new resources. Click here for a list of the new ones.]

The following are readings I’ve collected about asset-based community development (ABCD) and other asset-based approaches to working with communities. (If you want you can read my brief introduction to asset-based community-driven development and at the bottom of this post are other posts I’ve written relevant to ABCD.)

While many of them are available online, some of them are chapters from a book or journal articles that are only available online if you (or a library you belong to) has a subscription.

Because it is quite a long list I have grouped them under the following headings:

  1. Some places to start
  2. General ABCD resources freely available on the internet
  3. General ABCD resources not freely available on the internet
  4. Asset-based approaches to health
  5. ABCD and faith based communities
  6. Other strengths-based approaches to working with communities
  7. Posts from this blog about asset-based community-driven development and strengths-based approaches

They are listed alphabetically under each heading (except for the ones in Some places to start)

There are also a range of other great resources at:

  1. The Asset-Based Community Development Institute (Publications; Training videos and podcasts and an ABCD Toolkit)
  2. The Coady International Institute
  3. The Jeder Institute
  4. The Nurturing Development blog
  5. The Bank of IDEAS
  6. Sustaining Community blog (this blog)

Please let me know if any links are broken and feel free to add any other resources you have found useful in the comments.

    Hi Graeme,

Many thanks for this fantastic list. I’m currently running a course on Asset Based approaches to working with communities at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. Would it be possible to share this list with my students as it includes quite a few references, especially to non UK work that I’ve not come across?
